A Note from Our Chairman

All of us at the Foundation wish to thank those whose energy helps us navigate these challenging times.  Whether it is a monetary donation or just an encouraging note, we all play a vital role in supporting our district and sustaining the best possible educational environment for our students.  The tireless energy of our teachers, administrators, and staff is an inspiration to us as we see the great lengths they go to in their effort to provide the safest educational experience for our students.

Moving into the coming year, we will continue to use your input to adapt our support to the needs of our students and the district community.  Thank you again for your continued support.  Stay safe out there!

Foundation Grant in Action:
uHandy Smartphone Microscope
GBS Science Teacher, Lisa Pavic, demonstrating the uHandy microscope.
Thanks to your donations we were able to fund the Spring 2020 grant: uHandy Smartphone Microscopes.  The grant receipients were Lisa Pavic and Sarah Davis who are Science teachers at GBS.

The uHandy microscope is a small and highly portable smartphone microscope that easily clips-on to your smart phone with no additional software needed. The magnification of up to 400x is just as good as the traditional microscopes, but the clip-on can be taken and used anywhere so it allows for more real-time exploration.

The uHandy microscopes will be implemented within the GBS Biology storyline curriculum.  For example in their Africa storyline, students will go to Brookfield Zoo to study habitats in addition to food chains and food webs.  With the microscope students can analyze some of the material in the walk-in habitats and explain how it is an adaptation that is beneficial for the species survival.  The portability of this microscope has endless uses.  We can't wait to see these in students hands soon!

Registration Donations

During 2020-21 online registration, GBS and GBN parents had the opportunity to donate to the Foundation.  Thanks to all those donations we were able to raise around $9k!  We appreciate your generosity especially during this precarious year!
2020 Scholarships
Every year the Foundation recognizes students who have worked hard during their school journey.  We wish the scholarship receipients above continued success throughout their college career and beyond!

Name: Mike Kupfer
School: GBS
Graduation Year: 1988
Academic Experience - I have a BS degree in Finance/Risk Management from The University of Wisconsin-Madison
Profession/Career Highlights - After spending about a decade working for a large IT company, I started my own IT Consulting firm, Black Diamond Solutions in 2004.  I still own and manage this business today.  In the past 10 years, I have started a few additional companies in a very wide range of industries varying from technology to fitness to custom wallpaper to custom apparel.  Today, in addition to the IT firm, I also am co-founder of a custom apparel print shop, Chicago Signs and Screen Printing as well as a Chicago themed apparel brand, 606 Apparel Co.  People say I am a great person to contact if you need help with technology, treadmills, or t-shirts.
Family and/or Pets (any current GBS kids?) I am married to my college sweetheart and we have two boys ages 18 and 14. We live in the city so my boys do not attend GBS. My older son’s hockey team played GBS in Hockey recently and GBS got the V-I-C-T-O-R-Y.  I was not as upset as with losses to other schools.
What is your favorite GBS memory? That is a tough one. I have a bunch. I was really into the music department.  Performed “The Boxer” with Jason Mathein in V-show Jr. Year. “One More Minute” in V-show with Todd Nahigian, and  Marty Hecht Senior year. Marching band trips to Arizona, Hawaii, and Florida.  All good times!

GBS Alumni Store

Unfortunately homecoming did not happen this year but that didn't stop Mike Kupfer from creating the GBS Alumni store.  The alumni store had various apparel such as hats, shirts, sweatshirts, and more.  Orders closed in October but hopefully it will open next year before homecoming so you can sport your GBS gear with pride!  25% of all proceeds went back to the Foundation.
Thank you to the following GBS alumni for sponsoring the 2020 alumni store store!
